Okay, so Ill write this down before I quit for the evening.
Russia would be willing to back down its territorial aggression but requires some kind of guarantee the US/West wont "lean on it like before".
US cant give such a guarantee as the nature of their government changes election cycle to election cycle so they cant "force" a new government to obey and as it has been seen, treaties can be broken.
Russia ackownledges this and asks for options.
US says that they can foster good relations between themselves and russia and hope that the spirit carries to the next president.
Russia asked for more specific actions.
Minors and Majors debate
They come to the conclusion that the safest way to do this is to increase pressure on the US specifically from "world community" and minors in general, ignoring Russia and potentially also China though that was not openly discussed tho I do not see a reason why China would be involved in the pressure as this was distinctly small countries, NATO countries, etc. The best way to do this is to increase their defence spending while the US at least makes the lowering of theirs a possibility, though no lowering is required by treaty, the idea is to get the minors from neutral and pro west block to put up a "resistance" to the US when it "flies off the handle" which it will, instead of trying to "trip" them into falling on Russia. The specific wordings are much MUCH more diplomatic than my translation but I am attempting to keep core in street parlance understandable.
US ponders for a moment but accepts, the idea of many minors offering a steady constant signal of "resistance" which fluctuates between "faces" is preferrable to "an opponent" that can be overcome, in this case, resistance should not be overcome completely as it would cause a "ark lightning" and backfire. But no resistance can also be accepted due to "fear of strange" which in my view, is justified, *Points at unimaginably massive cosmos*.
After a while, US and Russia and Minors agree to conclude for the night and return to this discussion tomorrow with a fresh set of eyes. In short everyone is feeling like this could be the biggest step towards peace yet.
To compress:
1. Russia stands down. 2. US accepts that resistance to it will be provided by its allied nations who will not do "as commanded" at all times, they will increase military spending to make this possible. 3. Everyone agrees that due to the nature of democracies, long term treaties are extremely unlikely to drive across the point like a policy of resistance by first your allies and only then who you want to "resist" again is better.
It seems like a good plan. Lets hope it works.
